The Body Shop Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask Review

This is my first The Body Shop Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask and after only one use I am really really really impressed. So thought of writing a review and sharing it with the world!

Like any other body shop face masks, it came in a plastic tub. The price is also quite steep for a 100 ml mask. It is selling 12 Euro in the Body Shop website but I paid 1500 taka from a Facebook page.

There is nothing much on the label.

Like every body shop product there is peel off label underneath where the application process is described briefly in different languages.

You can find more information on The Body Shop Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask on the Body Shop website actually. It is described as "This revitalising clay mask cleanses skin and controls excess oil
  • Draws out impurities
  • Clarifying
  • Refreshing"
Personally I think the mask does all of these more or less. Mind you, I have only used it once so far. For testing purposes, that is without pre-steam or exfoliation etc. Just cleansed my face with a mild cleanser and put some on.

A bit on seaweed first, according to Body Shop they collected it "The bladderwrack seaweed we use grows wild in clean waters off the south-west coast of Ireland." It is really good for problem prone oily skin. It has a really strong and somewhat unpleasant aroma but I couldn't smell any due to a perfume added to the mask to musk it.

The Ingredients list for The Body Shop Seaweed Ionic Clay Mask ,which is also mentioned in the label:

Kaolin, Aqua/Water/Eau, Heilmoor Clay, Lithothamnium Calcarum Powder, Alcohol Denat., Glycerin, Bentonite, Talc, Pentylene Glycol, Maris Limus Extract, Polysorbate 20, Myristamidopropyl PG-Dimonium Chloride Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Fucus Vesiculosus Powder, Parfum/Fragrance, Bisabolol, Butylene Glycol, Citric Acid, Fucus Vesiculosus Extract, Disodium EDTA, Zinc PCA, Linalool, Benzyl Alcohol, Farnesol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Benzyl Salicylate, Laminaria Saccharina Extract, Alumina, Tocopherol, CI 42090/Blue 1 Lake.

It has a mud mask like color and texture . The consistency is really thick. A little product was enough to cover my full face. It was recommend to keep the mask on for 10 minutes but since it is winter and I used a thin layer, mine dried within 3-4 minutes. I took the mask off after 5 minutes.

I could see immediate difference. The mask definitely made my skin brighter and added a glow! Now all mud masks have a skin brightening affect more or less but this one is the most prominent.

I heard some people, specially those who have sensitive skin, experiences a kind of burning sensation using this mask but I didn’t get any. Then again I do not have sensitive skin but an oily one. I did saw some redness around my lips and nose after taking off the mask but it went away quickly. Keep in mind this is a purifying face mask so you may experience some redness and breakouts immediately after applying, the purpose of this mask is to bring out the impurity from your skin to the surface and get rid of it. This is why it is recommended that you do not use it the day before any important event.

I also had a moderate pimple on my forehead but the morning after I noticed it was totally shrink and left no mark.

I also noticed about 70% reduction of blackheads around and on my nose and whiteheads around my chin. This is an added plus!

The mask supposedly can control oil as well, but since it is winter season and all, my extremely oily skin isn’t that oily. So cant comment on that.

Some people may find the scent of the mask bit overwhelming. It didn’t bother me much, if something I was rather helpful that it musked the seaweed smell, but not sure about people with sensitive skin.

It is recommend to be used twice a week but I think I will be using it once a week during this winter season.

So all in all, I will totally recommend the mask, specially to people with problematic skin. But not sure about people with dry to normal skin, as I think this mask can a bit drying. I would totally repurchase the mask though.

My rating: 8/10

Let me know if you have any question or comments :)

    1. I dont think so...the way a purifying masks work is it take off stuff that is near the surface like blackheads, white heads, pimples and other impurity...you will need strong anti-mark creams for acne scars...i had some acne on my forhead about 2-3 years ago due to some medications but once i started using avon's banishing cream they faded away like 80% now can barely be seen :) it also took care of some discoloration here and there...i highly recommend it :)
