Sleek blush by 3: Lace and Pumpkin - Review/s

If there is only one type of make-up I could pick, I would pick blush. I love blush. I am almost never without a bit of color on my cheeks. Never!!
Now, I have medium-subcontinental-olive-ish skin-tone and never really liked pink blushes much. Different shades of orange, on the other hand, work out so well.  In fact they are all I ever apply these days..
So naturally, I had to get two famous Sleek's famous blush by 3 palettes for orange shades, Lace and Pumpkin.

Bodyshop Aqua Eye Mask Review

I was just browsing  Bodyshop website randomly (which I do a lot) and came across this mask. Read the first few reviews (do it, I dare you) and I just had to get it (Of course I had to wait until a sale, Bodyshop is always giving one sale after another and buying something without sale would be such an waste.)

DIY Shea Butter whip with coconut and honeysuckle oil

I have had one organic raw shea butter lying around in the fridge forever.  I had to process it before use and I felt so lazy! And I already have too many body butters as it is. But winter is coming and even though my hair isn't normally dry, it will be. So I made this DIY Shea Butter whip with coconut and honeysuckle oil.

My first ever at-home 35% Glycolic Peel: procedure & experience

I have been reading so much about at-home peels and thier amazing results, finally decided to try for myself. But did my research first. Went with very low strenght, 35% glocolic peel from skin  beauty solution. Figured out once I start slow, I can build up a tolerance and then go higher and maybe try stronger peels like TCA later.

Round face contouring example -1

Round faces, well, its just round. While it is good to have that much fat underneath the skin, make us look younger and stay younger and all, it can also be terribly boring. Contouring is an awesome way to add definition to round faces, if done properly that is.

Experiencing hairfall? Detailed post on diagnosing hairfall problem with solutions

I get a lot of messages every week asking about hairfall problems. I myself have suffered through this during different stages of my life. Back when I first started chemical processing. Rebonding and hair colors and highlighting. Then I stopped doing all those and it was all fine for a while and then boom hair started falling again. Turns out it was my thyroid.

Anyway so with the universal solution of oiling your hair and stopping over processing, there are also a number of other things to be done here. I am writing it all down so I can simply forward this link instead of replying everyone individually about things that I know of.

How to hide lip hyperpigmentation with a concealer

I have hyper-pigmented lips. Most of the time, I dont really bother much to do with anything about it and wear lipstick/tint/gloss/balm as it is (for example, see my MUA power pout swatches here), visible hyperpigmentation be damned.

But sometimes when I am going for really nude-ish color and want that pale look, hyperpigmentation can totally ruin the effect. That is where concealer comes in play.

Hair growth with Castor oil: Update

I have been trying to grow my hair out for sometimes now. I do get my end trimmed every 6 months or so but my last hair cut was atleast 14-15 months ago. My Hair has grown from not even shoulder lenght to almost waist lenght in this time period. Mind you, my hair doesn't normally grow in this rate. I credit it all to atleast once a week application of castor oil (wrote a detailed post on it back a while here

My full skin care routine for oily skin with Retin-A, HQ, AHA, Naicinamide and Vitamin C

Have been planning on writing a post on my full skin care routine for a while now....

So a few notes on my skin first. I have extremely oily skin. I have sun tan and general discoloration on my forehead, outer cheek and some spots on chin which is my most break-out prone and problematic area. I am also prone to blackheads (nose) and whiteheads( pretty much whole face but mostly chin).

Thus my priority is not only moisturizers and oil control but to keep blackheads, whiteheads, breakout etc on check therefore AHA. Also trying to even out my skin tone by using HQ to get rid of sun tan and marks. Trying to improve the texture as well, plus whatever anti-oxidant benefits I can find so added Vit C. Plus I am 27+ years old so introduced very light dose of Retin-A too.

Because you cant use Retin-A, AHA etc on same day/night ( or consecutive even, for beginners like me), I am going divide my routine into 5 days/night circle. I know it sounds like a lot of products but its not really, most of them are repetitive. Plus I never really bother much with high end products, like if its doing something special ( for example I am eying Paula's Choice for AHA/BHA next) but say moisturizers or cleansers? I cant feel any difference and Alhumdulliah everything pretty much suits my skin so yes my special priorities are problems like suntan/oiliness/breakouts like I mentioned earlier.

DIY Vit C serum: Update

Here's is an update and a simplified version of my previous DIY Vit C serum formula
You can use either pure vit C powder/ ascorbic acid or vit C ampoule, whatever you prefer or have access to

Using vit C ampoule:
you'll only need
1. 500 mg of Vit C liquid
2. Distilled water/ if you have oily skin you can also use witch hazel
3. Light oil (like almond/vit e/ grape seed oil), this is optional only for dry/normal to dry skin

  • Step 1: break the ampoule on the top and put the liquid in a clean container.
  • Step 2: fill the now-empty ampoule with water or witch hazel and add that water/witch hazel to the container. Do it 3 times. If you have oily skin and have witch hazel you can also use it, but dont use only witch hazel, mix it with water, like 1 ampoule of witch hazel and 2 ampoule of water etc
  • Step 3: if you have dry/ normal to dry skin add half a table spoon of light oil to the container. Shake well before use.
  • Step 4: Apply this after you wash your face, just a few drops should cover the whole face. Wait atleast 15 minute before you proceed with moisturizer.
Thats it. Keep it refrigerated. you can use it for 6 days tops. After  that make a new batch.

Use this ratio for 5-6 months. Then go to 2:1. That is for each ampoule of vit C use only two ampoule of water ( fill the ampoule twice only). DO NOT INCREASE THE POTENCY ANYMORE THOUGH.

Using vit C powder:
You'll need:
1. Ascorbic Acid powder
2. Distilled water/ if you have oily skin you can also use witch hazel

  • Simply take a pinch of vit c powder on your palm and add some drop of water/witch hazel to it. Apply. Pure ascorbic acid will absorb instantly.
  • Or you can just add a pinch of vit C powder to you day moisturizer/ night moisturizer and apply that. This is what I do

For more formulation please visit make-up-alley's DIY Vit C page...almost everyone has thier own formula for it. So whatever works for you.

I have used the first version ( using ampoule) for 7-8 months on a regular basis then switched into the 2nd one during last month and I can personally say both works. I only changed because making serums every 5-6 days was getting kind of tiring...

It changed the look and feel of my skin. I sometimes skip it during the day, specially if i am going out since vit c can increase sun sensitivity but  I have been applying it religiously the nights I do not use Retin-A. And wake up with glowing, plumped, soft and clearer face. Seriously! Not only it helped to improve the texture of my skin, it also helped to fade my tan/marks. So give it a try, you will begin to see improvements in 2-3 months Insha Allah

Let me know if you have any question or query about this

Do you wash your face with a cleanser after using a face mask?

For the last one month, whatever face mask I am using, after the allotted time, like 15-20 minutes, I have been washing off the mask with a cleanser instead of rinsing off with only water.

I am scared of the mask residue specially cleansing or purifying ones because they are strong) what the long term affect might be. Also how the leftover residue would interact with moisturizer or block pores or cause breakout or whatever.

Even home made face masks like juice or aspirin, washing it off with cleansers so it neutralizes the ph level (these juice and aspirin masks can be quite acidic) and also makes my skin less sensitive to sun (specially if I am going out, never go out in the sun with residue of acidic mask)

Some may argue that washing off face mask will limit the ability of the mask for work after the allotted time. That is say, you apply a purifying mask, keep it on for 15 minutes, wash it off with cleanser, the mask is no longer purifying your skin. If you had washed it off with only water, it would; have. So you think you're getting more/better result? In my opinion that is just wrong. Because masks are not designed to work for a longer period of time. 5-20 minutes is all you need. So if you're washing your mask off with only water and happy with it, no problem. But if you experience redness, rash or even breakout after applying face masks. try it. Wash it off using a mild cleanser. It is a safer and much sanitary option

Time to invest in some Cleansing Conditioner

Meet As I Am Coconut Cowash Cleansing Conditioner, the next product on my to-buy list

Co-wash is the new rage. It is where you use conditioner instead of shampoo to wash your hair...

Why you ask? Well for one, shampoo strips off all the natural oils from your scalp and hair leaving it dry, brittle, vulnurable to shedding and breakage. Think about your skin after a harsh cleanser and not following up with moisturizer. Same principle really.

This is specailly applicable for curly/wavy hair ..that is how the whole no-poo movement came into place. That is, totally cold turkey on shampoo.. using either alternative shampoo or sulfate/silicone free shampoo

Please search net for more info on no-poo if you're interesed. But I will tell you one thing...all the people who have tried it or been trying it, 99% have experienced positive results. It is an amazing read.

How to Highlight your face: Following the traingle method

So a lot of people have been asking me about how to highlight your face and when I try to explain the triangle method they look at me funny lol...so I made this tutorials to explain.

It is pretty easy. And work with every face shape..because you're not just taking a random point and using it for all face for all face shape but working with specific points ( eyes, nose etc) of your face which may differ from face shape to face shape. So it is really versatile.

Before I begin, there can be a lot of ways to highlight your face. You can use a cream highlighter or a foundation, after you apply foundation or even before you apply foundation, specially if the cream highlighter or foundation is tad too light and you need help blending.
If you are using a powder highlighter, you should apply it after foundation>blush/contourer or any other creamy product that you're> compact or setting powder..it will last long this way.
You can also use both a cream foundation/highlighter and a powder highlighter if you're going for a night party look.

So I mostly do highlighting after correcting> concealing> foundation> contouring(blended) and then highlight

I use a foundation 3-4 shades lighter than my skin and a concealer brush to trace the region and fill it up. And this is how I trace (Open the image in a new window to see the original size)

DIY AHA watermelin-lemon Face Mask

Remember my post on how to make home made DIY face mask...recap here

Here's a fun demonstration of one of my most fav recipee of summer: Watermelon and lemon AHA face mask.

The solution is really watery so you will need compressed face mask to apply it. By all means, you can simply splash the juice on your face but it will dry up in like 2-3 minutes and for AHA to work on your skin, that is to exfoloitae, to brighten up, to remove sun tan, to fade marks, to reduce the apperacnce of pores, to help with break outs, to help with anti-aging thing (yes AHA does all that...search google if you dont believe me) you need to give it a little more time...
Thats where the compressed face mask comes into play..you can drench it with the juice and apply the mask on your face and the skin will be in contact with the juice aka AHA. You can keep the face mask on for 30-40 minutes or until dry and AHA will have that much time to work on magic.

So here is your basic water melon lemon solution. I simply squeezed a piece of water melon (about 6-7 table spoon of juice) and one forth of a small lemon (1 table-spoon). Water melon is really mild, if your skin can not stand the strongher lime based fruit juice ( lemon, lime, orange) you should go with water melon. However, to get the full benefit of AHA, you would need strong acidic fruits ( again lime based fruit, grape even apple)...so this is a middle ground. You have your regular acidic fruit, lemon juice and mild highly hydrating fruit like water melon. I normally use a lot more lemon (about 50-50) because my skin can stand it...its conditioned to acidic juice...but for a beginners, I suggest to start slow, half or a table spoon of lemon juice.

My foundation routine for oily skin: highlight+ contouring + blush + full face make-up : step by step (products only)

A brief run down of how I do a full face make-up and what products I use...its pretty basic, full coverage, yet flexible enough that changing a product or two can totally make it medium coverage or even natural no make-up look.

This is ofcourse only products only, as I am not, and will never never be comfortable with sharing my pic in public. Deal with it :)

Cleanse:
So first of all, I just wash my face with a oil control face wash and apply watered down witch hazel, which is what I am using as a toner these days...Since my skin is bit flaky, I always do a thorough oil cleansing the day before I'll apply foundation. Or whatever product I use, there will be flakes..hated it..but oil cleansing method has solved all the problem

Moisturize:
I have super oily skin, so for moisturizer, I prefer something gel. Right now, my fav moisturizer before foundation is Garnier Moisture Rescue.

Avon ADVANCE TECHNIQUES Frizz Control Lotus Shield Anti-Frizz Treatment Review

Okay. This is my most fav hair leave-in in the world but I wont necessarily say this is the best leave in the world because I think just as with any other Avon product, it can be a hit or miss. Just read the Make Up Alley reviews, not really that great are they? But there are also tons of youtube and blog reviews that raves about the product, so yes, it all comes down to individual hair types, it suits some and doesnt suit the others.

So here is my holly grail...it comes with a very sleek box and the bright orange color is really tempting. The graphics designer inside me loves it.

D-I-Y Home Facial: Conair Facial Sauna System Reveiw and How to Use

I bought this last december but was stalling the review because there is just too many parts too many pictures to be taken and lets face it, when its steaming, its a bit hard to take pictures. But have been getting requests to share my opinions on the product so here they are.
I was never really regular at getting pro-facials, mostly because, this sounds weird, but I dont feel comfortable with random stranger touching my face. I also have problems whith who-knows-what they have been putting on my face. Finally I have always found the facials a bit painful, the stream is suffocating, they way they sometimes try pick one or two pimples downright hurts and the exfoliation is never upto my liking...its just never as good as doing it myself. So I thought to hell with it and ordered a home-steamer online...

The Body Shop Vitamin E Illuminating Moisture Cream Review

I have been reading about this cream for ages. But the "illuminating" part made me pause...I have oily skin. I have sub-continental skin-tone. Didn't know if it was a good idea to incorporate pink color! and glitters! Specially ordering online, as I have no idea how it would turn out.

So when I found a Body Shop showroom during my recent India tour, this is the product that I tested first. And fell in love in first sight try.

This, is a moisturizing cream with a twist...an illuminating twist if I may...

Bath and Body works Body Mist Coconut and lime: short review!

So I was browsing some super shop in Delhi where I saw this Bath & Body Works counter. Randomly decided to try out some products including body mists...they didn't have a lot of collection but the coconut and lime one was just wow! From the first sniff, I knew I want this in my life.

This body mist was a part of Bath and Body Works the Caribbean collection ...It wasn't anything new though, smells just like a regular coconut and lime drink. Yet pretty exotic.

The price reasonable as well, some 300 rupee, in taka i guess it would come down to less than 450. Not bad for 200 ml/ 6.7 fl oz.

Panasonic Ionity Hair straightener review

Finally tried my new hair straightener...I dont like to straighten my hair much so waited for like 1-2 weeks till I felt like wearing my hair straight yesterday hence got to testing. Here is my short verdict

First of all..no heat control dial so constant heat on same temperature, which wasn't a lot, even my Phillips iron in medium heat setting would heat up my hair more...anyway it is a good thing for me since i dont like to heat my hair much anyway but if you have kind of coarse hair, you'll need more heat for sure.

The most interesting features is the twin external ion nozzles i think...I have used ion irons before (again phillips one) but this works better...it turned my hair extremely shiny in a matter of minutes.

It is also quite large so I could take a big chunk of hair (5-6 inch thick) and iron only once or twice and done. Ofcourse I wasn't looking for pin straight finish, I never do, barely  straight with volumes and little waves. The whole process took me less than 10 minutes, 5-6 I guess...

So anyway, while it is certainly more expensive than phillips (phillips was about 3.5 while this is almost 5k in Bangladeshi taka) its totally served my purposed, less heat, easy to work with a lot of hair and time saving. I also really loved the design, reminds me of dolphin somehow :p...feeling pretty much happy with the purchase.

Always wash your face after you wash off hair conditioner to prevent facial breakouts

Often, people shampoo their hair first and put on conditioner and then go about washing. scrubbing body, face etc to get the conditioner to stay on for the longest time possible. I used to do this to. Until I read the danger of it in one of the dermatology websites.

Hair Conditioner, is a super thick compound which has silicone, different kind of hair moisturizer (which may or may not be 100% oil free) plus other chemicals. It can not be totally removed only by water. This is the whole point of putting conditioner on your hair actually. Even after you wash it off very well with water, it will still be coating your hair to prevent it from damage and making it shiny, soft, etc.

Which is all good, except when you are washing your hair, some water will inevitably pass through your face. Conditioner diluted water. Just like your hair, it will also leave a residue on your skin, on your face and even on your neck and body. Now since the residue is not much, it should not create any problem for body, but for face it is a different story. Even a tiny bit of leftover residue can lead to break-outs.

So even after you are done washing your hair and everything, the conditioner residue on your face will still be there, since we already established that water alone can not remove conditioner residue completely. You will not see it, you may not even feel it, but it will be there.

Healthy Shop White Face Sea Salt Scrub: Short Review

Like almost everyone else, I had also been struggling to use Healthy Shop White Face Sea Salt Scrub...I got it when I got a bunch of Healthy shop goodies few months back...I normally like H S skin care products a lot...not quite the international standard like Body Shop or Lush but definitely better than the products available here in Bangladesh.

However, this is the first product from this brand which was a huge disappointment. It just too much. The color blue is too weird. Blue!! I kid you not.

The salts are too strong. Burnt like hell the moment it touched my skin. I washed off right away but still ended up with rash and allergy-like reactions. And I do not even have sensitive skin.

DIY Aspirin Face Mask, Witch Hazel toner and Coastal Scents Silica Powder: My new 3-step for pore & problem free skin

I have really realy really oily skin. So naturally, I have large visible pores. These makes my skin look and feel kind of bumpy. They attract blackheads, white heads and other problems. These are the areas where my skin breaks out the most. Sometimes its ugly looking pimple, sometimes its just some rash or redness... Thing is, they create problems and they look weird. The pores are even more prominent with any face powder that I used, no matter if its translucent, mineral or compact.

Seriously, of all the skin complications, pores have always been my number one problem.

Previously I have used some pore-minimizing products like Murad T-Zone Pore Refining Gel with moderate success, but they are not available locally and they are darn costly. So I have been looking for a cheaper and preferably D-I-Y option forever, you know, me being such a D-I-Y freak :D

Recently, I have started to use D-I-Y Aspirin Masks, Witch Hazel Toner and Silica powder and together, within only a week or so, they have minimized my pores more than any product ever did!

Easy Face highlighting: Natural Healthy Glow

This is one of the easiest trick to highlight your face if there is one ever! I saw it in some youtube video I think, cant remember where, will add the link if I can find it..

So I have supremely oily skin so my face is really shiny pretty much all the time. Even if you dont have a naturally oily-I-mean-shiny face, the winter-care moisturizers and face creams are making it somewhat shiny I bet. The trick is to use this shine to our advantange...

So if you are using any mattifyng powder, compact powder, translucent powder or simply any powder to get rid of the shine that comes with oily skin/winter care products, do not apply the powder all over your face.  Leave the places where you'd highlight....

shoes under what a joke

I have too many shoes. Yes. We do have a pretty big shoe storage but I still have way too many shoes. So does my sis. So I saw these shoes under ads and thought what the hell

Exactly! What the hell!!!

That is what they advertised. And this is what I got. Two of them, none the less.

Serves me right :( i knew it is never "as seen on tv"

Now my sis, who is a student of arch. is trying to add a cardboard type support system so that we can make it work, barely...

Note to myself: Infomercials? NEVER AGAIN!

To-Buy List for February

Since I am currently pretty much broke, I can only wait for January to end so that I start getting my pay checks again :(
In the meanwhile, I will keep making lists of stuff i'd buy...on Febraury...oh dear, please come soon..

These are what I want so far
  1. Garnier Moisture Rescue Gel-Cream: Dupe for Clinique's moisture surge...been eyeing it for quite a while now
  2. Hard Candy Nobody's Perfect: Darn coastal scents is not working that well, so need this back
  3. MUA conceal and brighten kit: New MUA product, have to try!!!
  4. Skin 79 hot pink BB cream: Haven't had any BB cream yet. Can you believe it? Heard this is the best for oily skin so going to start with that...
  5. Astalift Jelly Aquarysta: Finally this one...have been hearing a lot of good things about it in the grapevine..the price still makes me kind of skeptical though...maybe the trial size would be worth a try?
Also thinking about buying a high end foundation...short-listed a few..but again not sure since the drug store one are working pretty well right now...so maybe I should spurge a little less on cosmetics and buy something useful..

So what is on your shopping list?

Home facial sauna and more...

Finally my conair home facial sauna has arrived...i have been wanting one for so long...my primary concern was not to steam my face but hair..as I have low porosity hair it is really hard to get any product (deep conditioner, hot oil) to penetrate my hair unless I keep it on for a prolonged amount of time...which can be quite a problem specially in this winter season...

Take Multi Vitamin. Daily.

In my opinion, it is one of the most important and easiest way to ensure healthy hair, skin as well as general physical condition. Take a multivitamin. Daily. Its that simple.

Even if you eat really healthy (which is hardly possible if you are a student or working or whatever with all skipping meals and junkfood and eating out) you may still not getting all the vitamins and minerals that your body needs on a daily basis. And dont worry, there is no such thing called over-multivitamin...whichever you do not need, your body will dispose of it naturally.

Mulch-vitamins will ensure your growth. It will help the internal organs to work effectively. Immune system will work better when your body is not lacking any essential nutrients, i.e. fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, SPF 45 Review: IT'S BREAKING ME OUT!!!!

Okay its official. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock, SPF 45 is breaking me out...I have been using it for last two months, on and off, and it has been breaking me out. Everytime!!!

Now I have extremely oily skin and a lot of things break me out. But it also recovers pretty well. So I wasn't bothered at first. And I wasn't sure that it is the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock not any other product that was the culprit. Hence begin the process of elimination...

But no matter what product I use, facial cleanser or oil cleansing, different moisturizers, toners, primers, foundations,  MoM or no MoM or whatever, my skin still broke out...small and large pimples on my forehead and chin its annoying.

So yesterday and today I skipped everything, no moisturizer, toners, primer or make and tonight while cleansing my face guess what I see? Surprise surprise...angry looking break outs. They look like cystic acne...only I never have had cystic acne...some lone pimples maybe but never acne (except for everytime I use this stupid sunblock)
